Not many business owners can say that the venue they run helped change the course of civil rights history. Stacy Lentz can. As a co-owner of the world-famous Stonewall Inn in New York City's Greenwich Village, Lentz has spent nearly two decades stewarding one of the most symbolically important buildings in American LGBTQ+ history — and she did it by maxing out her credit cards to get there.

Lentz grew up middle-class in what she describes as "the middle of a cornfield, in the middle-of-nowhere Kansas." Even as a young person, she was aware that her feelings didn't align with the expectations around her. What the Stonewall Inn Means to the LGBTQ+ Community
The Stonewall Inn is more than a bar. Located on Christopher Street in Manhattan, it was the site of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising, a series of spontaneous protests by members of the LGBTQ+ community following a police raid. Those events are widely considered the catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement in the United States and around the world. In 2016, the site was designated a National Monument by President Barack Obama — the first U.S. national monument dedicated to LGBTQ+ history.
For Lentz and her co-owners, taking over such a place was never simply a business decision. It was, as she describes it, "the responsibility of a lifetime." The weight of that responsibility is something she carries every day.
Going Into Debt to Buy a Piece of History
Lentz and her three co-owners purchased the Stonewall Inn in 2006. The acquisition was not without significant personal financial risk. Lentz went into credit card debt to fund her share of the purchase — a decision that most financial advisors would counsel against, but one she has never regretted.
Running a historic landmark bar in one of the most expensive cities in the world is not a path to wealth. Lentz has been candid about the fact that she has never made much money from the venture. Beyond the bar itself, Lentz serves as CEO of the Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative, the nonprofit arm associated with the iconic venue. The organization works to advance LGBTQ+ rights and visibility, channeling the historical legacy of the Stonewall Uprising into present-day advocacy and community support.
The initiative represents Lentz's broader philosophy: that owning the Stonewall Inn is not just about preserving a landmark but about actively continuing the work that began on those steps and inside those walls more than fifty years ago. The bar is a living institution, not a museum piece, and the Gives Back Initiative is one of the primary ways that vision is realized in practice.
The Sacrifice Behind the Symbol
There is an important lesson embedded in Lentz's story that goes beyond LGBTQ+ history or New York City nightlife. It is about the difference between choosing a career and choosing a calling. Many people spend their working lives in roles that pay reasonably well but fail to provide a sense of deeper meaning. Lentz made the opposite trade. She chose meaning — and accepted that it might never make her rich.
